Historical Information

The planet's ozone layer was nearly destroyed when the nearby moon,Praxis, was partially disintegrated in 2293. The subsequent shockwave left the Homeworld with an approximated 50 years of life left and left the Empire's economy and infrastructure in shambles. This forced peace talks with the Federation which ultimately led to not only the Khitomer Accords, but to the saving of the very planet itself. Through discussion and collaboaration with Federation Scientists, Klingon Scientists and Engineers were able to undo enough of the damage Praxis had wrought and spare the planet from a death sentence. Qo'noS remains damaged from the event however and the planet has a perpetually polluted looking atmosphere with a green tinge. This is from the lifesaving processes used on the planet and not any actual pollution. The High Council has enacted draconian measures on emissions to prevent further weakening of their precarious ozone layer as it continues to heal. The process is expected to continue over the next four or five generations (i.e. 600 to 750 earth years)

The surface of Qo'noS includes a single large land mass and a vast ocean. In addition, the planet has a severely tilted axis which causes wild seasonal changes, a turbulent atmosphere, and extremes of both warm and frigid weather.
