Thermal Superconductive Armor

From TFC Galactopedia

A new development in Imperial hull armor, thermal superconductive armor derives its name from one of the layers present in the new design. Instead of the traditional thick single-layered hull, Thermal Superconductive Armor is formed from carefully layered alternating meshes of materials. The primary hull plating material is the standard Dura-Armor, enmeshed with a superconductive material in a micron-scale lattice, to maximize distribution area. In cross-section, a "typical" piece of hull plating contains an outer layer of the armor/superconductive material, layered with Dura-Armor, layered again with a zesium-rich alloy as an ablation agent, and an additional layer of Dura-Armor. This allows the armor to handle weapons fire that penetrates one layer of the armor without causing a breach, and to distribute energy across a wide section of the hull. There are a few drawbacks to this new design, however. As the superconducting material is not neutronium-based, and is quite a bit less dense than typical Dura-Armor, this design enjoys no special advantage against nadion-based weaponry. In addition, because the superconductive mesh relies on a large area in order to re-radiate energy into space, any damage to the mesh will decrease the effectiveness of the entire hull, albeit by a small amount.
