Summary
A failed experiment in the Far Galaxy by Rebel scientist Professor Arthur Sunrider intersects with an experimental drive test aboard the USS FELIX in the Imatia system of the Alpha Quadrant. When the two energy beams combine, an Imperial DEATH STAR disappears through the anomaly that will become known as the Great Rift.
When the FELIX scans the battlestation, the crew learns that the DEATH STAR runs on a type of energy that is extremely dangerous to subspace travel. An away team led by Captain Marc Xavier is immediately dispatched, but their presence is detected and the captain must be left behind. He is immediately interrogated and, following a fluctuation of the Rift that allowed the DEATH STAR to return to its home galaxy, he is shipped off for in-depth questioning. With the captain gone, Admiral Sher Khal'Saad takes command of the Imperial vessels as they face off against the Federation.
Though the captain is rescued by Zannah Lyles, a smuggler and Jedi Knight who hijacked the Imperial shuttle he was being transported on, three more members of his crew are taken captive in his absence: Chief Technical Engineer Lanna Tigris, Security Chief Deano Fuhrer, and Lt. J.G. Jamarr Moore. When tortured by Sith Lord Shinsen Korriban, Jamarr Moore cracks and gives the Sith and Imperials all the information they desire on the Federation and its Starfleet, but it does not come free of cost to the Sith: Jedi Padawan Perdia Detami senses Korriban's presence on the battlestar and raises the alarm aboard the FELIX.

Chapter Summaries
Chapters 1-10
- Chapter 1
- A Rebel corvette en route to a secret base on the planet Sullust is destroyed by Imperial vessels, but not before the ship's captain can warn the Sullustian Rebels. Meanwhile in Federation space, the USS FELIX is preparing to test its new transwarp drive, oblivious to the danger the Sullustian Rebels face at the hands of the sinister Ysanne Lisard, director of the Imperial Ubiqtorate.
- With the Sullust base evacuations underway, one science team stays behind to test its sole hope for the future, a primary thermal generator. When the generator's test goes awry and intersects with the transwarp drive experiments from the FELIX in the far-distant Milky Way Galaxy, The Great Rift is inexplicably opened -- drawing a DEATH STAR into Federation space.
- Chapter 2
- The scientific team from the Sullust Rebel base try to escape the deadly situation while they can, while on board the DEATH STAR Grand Moff Kobin Tarvik is in a state of fury. The violent opening of the Rift not only drew his station into completely alien territory, but also shut down the battlestation's main reactor. He orders that power be restored immediately.
- On Bajor, the planet closest to the Rift, a pair of students studying a prophecy that mentions the "Death of the Stars" are shocked by a sudden earthquake. The earthquake disturbs not only the students, but also Jedi Padawan Perdia Detami, who is accused by angry Bajorans of drawing the wrath of the Prophets in the form of the quake. The chapter ends with Perdia running from the crowd.
- Chapter 3
- Director Lisard orders a search for the missing DEATH STAR, which is still stuck in the Milky Way Galaxy. When the FELIX moves closer to the battlestation to conduct more accurate scans, their finds - both the crew tally and the weapon potential - shock the crew. Aboard the battle station, Grand Moff Tarvik spots the FELIX and orders that the main core be brought back online within an hour so that they can deal with the new threat.
- Back on Bajor, the two students are arguing with a Vedek about the prophecy. They barely win access to the library, where they find a prophetic reference to the 'Knight of the Stars'. With a lucky guess, they determine the prophecy to be speaking of a starship, and pull up details about the FELIX, the only Starknight class vessel in service.
- Perdia Detami, still stuck on Bajor, is loitering in the spaceport looking for a ride. When a member of the Kai's Starfleet guard catches her in an act of thievery, he confronts the girl - only to find that there's more to the half-starved feline than meets the eye. With Deano Fuhrer down for the count, Perdia tries to escape, but ends up being stunned by another member of the commander's security team and falls into their custody.
